Village youths are zipping around on their motorcycles with ghetto blasters as the most audible sign of change. Meanwhile, a mysterious oil spill in the fish nurseries poisons the fish. In the midst of all this, Tatsuo, a womanizing lumberjack who trains hunting dogs to down wild boar by tearing them to pieces, despises the idea of the marine park. He is especially offended by a scheming land broker who is trying to sucker his mother into selling the family property. Less predictably, Tatsuo comes home one fine day and murders his mother, sisters, wife and two children, and then commits suicide rather than allow them to live in a world desecrated by modernization.
As a Western moviegoer, I concluded that Tatsuo's mother must have made a deal behind Tatsuo's back. Otherwise why have her ask Tatsuo not to be angry with her only moments before he loads his shotgun? The director claims, however, that the murders and suicide are simply a ritual purification for the survival of the village, and that Tatsuo represents the idea of ikenie (the scapegoat), which he regards as the main theme of "Himatsuri." Such are the differences between East and West. Nevertheless, moviegoers of both hemispheres should be able to appreciate Mitsuo Yanagimachi's style. Intense and crisp even when the story meanders, "Himatsuri" observes its characters with the detached scrutiny of an epic novel.
